OAKVILLE, ON -The Redeemer Royals men's volleyball team opened the second half of the season with a strong road performance, earning a 3–1 victory over the Sheridan Bruins on Friday night (Jan. 9) at Sheridan College.
Redeemer entered the match with a 4–5 record and faced an early test in the opening set. The Royals jumped out to a commanding lead midway through the frame but struggled from the service line, allowing Sheridan to claw back. The Bruins ultimately edged the set 28–26. Despite the setback,
Luke Marshall set the tone offensively for Redeemer, delivering several timely kills and coming up big at the net with key blocks.
The Royals responded well in the second set. Redeemer built an early four-point cushion, taking a 9–5 lead, and maintained control throughout the frame.
Simon Bourne played a pivotal role, providing composure, consistency, and leadership as the Royals secured the set 25–19 to even the match.
Momentum continued to swing Redeemer's way in the third set. Fueled by Bourne's impact from the service line, the Royals jumped out to a 7–2 lead, forcing an early Sheridan timeout. The Bruins made a late push, but Jeremiah Zomerman answered with a strong service run down the stretch to give Redeemer a 23–18 advantage. Zomerman then sealed the set in emphatic fashion, hammering a monstrous kill off a Sheridan defender and into the rafters to give the Royals a 2–1 match lead.
Redeemer carried that energy into the fourth set. An early momentum-shifting play saw
Andrew Walcott save a serve off the tape, setting up an out-of-system ball from Bourne that
Jonah Heidbuurt finished with authority. The sequence ignited the Royals, who followed it up with a service ace from
Jared Prinsloo and a stuff block by
Jack Demik, forcing another early Bruins timeout. Redeemer built an 11–5 lead and never looked back, cruising to a 25–19 set win to close out the match.
Luke Marshall delivered an exceptional all-around performance, producing consistently throughout the night, while
Simon Bourne was instrumental on both sides of the ball, leading the Royals with poise in key moments.
With the 3–1 victory, Redeemer opens the second half of the season on a positive note as they continue to build momentum moving forward.
