Ancaster, ON – In a playoff battle worthy of the stage, the Redeemer Royals Men's Volleyball team defeated the Algonquin Wolves in a dramatic five-set OCAA cross-over Saturday evening at Redeemer University. The Royals (9-7) overcame the Wolves (10-6) by scores of 23-25, 23-25, 25-22, 25-16, 25-11.
The Royals and Wolves were playing their first match-up in several years, and it did not disappoint. The contest featured momentum swings, high-level attacking, and clutch execution from both sides.
Algonquin struck first, claiming the opening two sets 25-23. The Wolves hit efficiently in set two (.368) and were paced offensively by Nick Gauthier Barber (13 kills), Connor Finnie (13 kills), and Julien Tran (8 kills). Gavin Hassell directed the offense with 40 assists as Algonquin controlled the early rhythm.
Facing elimination, Redeemer responded with poise and firepower. The Royals turned the tide in set three behind a balanced offensive push.
Jeramiah Zomerman delivered 17 kills on a blistering .483 hitting percentage, while
Simon Bourne added 16 kills and seven service aces to ignite the crowd. The Royals took the third 25-22 and carried that momentum forward.
Set four saw Redeemer assert control at the net, hitting .429 and limiting Algonquin's opportunities in transition.
Jack Demik contributed five kills and four blocks, while
Ben Brouwer orchestrated the offense masterfully, finishing with 50 assists, 12 digs, and two block assists. With the match tied 2-2, the Royals delivered their strongest performance in the deciding set. Redeemer hit .529 in the fifth, closing out the match 25-11 behind disciplined serve pressure and efficient attacking. The Royals finished the night hitting .325 as a team compared to Algonquin's .208.
Zomerman (19 points), Bourne (24 points), and Demik (10 points) led the scoring effort, while
Silas Breukelman and
Jared Prinsloo provided key support throughout. Defensively, the Royals totalled 49 digs and 10 team blocks to stabilize the backcourt and disrupt the Wolves' rhythm. With the victory, Coach Wes Schilstra and the Royals advance to the OCAA quarterfinal round and now prepare for their toughest test yet: a matchup against the East-leading Seneca Sting on Friday evening in Toronto. Seneca enters as the No. 2 seed in the province, and the Royals will look to carry Saturday's comeback momentum into what promises to be a high-intensity playoff battle.
