ANCASTER, ON – With just over two months remaining before the start of the OCAA regular season, Redeemer University Athletics is pleased to announce a revised and expanded leadership team for the Royals men's volleyball program.
Ed Bosveld, who recently served as Director of Men's Volleyball, has been appointed Head Coach and will lead the Royals on the court for the 2026–27 season.
Bosveld assumes the head coaching role following the leadership of interim head coach Wes Schilstra, who guided the Royals to a 9–7 record and a fourth-place finish in the OCAA West Division last season. Schilstra will remain an integral member of the program, transitioning into the role of Lead Assistant Coach and Defensive Coach.
Returning assistant coaches Joel Sloots and Nathan Snippe will continue with the program, providing important continuity to the Royals' coaching staff.
Redeemer has also added two experienced coaches to further strengthen the program.
Ariel Castromayor brings nearly four decades of experience in competitive volleyball as both a player and coach. His coaching background includes serving as head coach of the Conestoga College men's volleyball program, involvement in various Team Ontario roles, and coaching and leadership positions with prominent volleyball clubs including Pakmen, Scorpions, and Titans.
Jeff Smith, former president and coach with the Ancaster Lions Volleyball Club, also joins the Royals staff. In addition to his extensive volleyball experience, Smith brings a distinguished background in martial arts and kickboxing. A two-time world kickboxing champion and four-time national champion, Smith also spent several years coaching and managing the Canadian national team.
"This is an exciting next step for our men's volleyball program because it brings together continuity, experience and an incredible depth of leadership," said James Kryger, Director of Athletics at Redeemer University. "Ed has a deep understanding of where we want this program to go, not simply in wins and losses, but in the kind of culture we are building and the young men we are developing. To surround him with coaches who bring this level of volleyball knowledge, competitive experience and commitment to mentorship is a tremendous investment in our student-athletes. Our goal is to build a program that consistently pursues excellence while remaining rooted in our Vertical Purpose — developing young men who compete with character, lead with humility and use their gifts to glorify God. I believe this leadership team positions Royals men's volleyball very well for both this season and the years ahead."
Bosveld will lead the program on the court while retaining his Director of Men's Volleyball responsibilities, with an ongoing focus on recruitment, program culture, long-term development and strategic direction.
"I'm grateful for the work that Coach Schilstra and his staff have done to build the program," said Bosveld. "We will have one of the most experienced teams in the OCAA this season, strengthened by some gifted incoming athletes, and I'm excited to work with this talented and experienced coaching team. We are seeing a significant increase in interest among potential recruits, and the future of the program looks bright. It's a privilege to take on a role that involves mentoring young student-athletes."
Kryger added, "There is a real sense of momentum around Royals men's volleyball. We believe strongly in the direction of the program, the student-athletes who are part of it and the leadership team we have assembled. We are excited to see this group continue building a program that Redeemer, our alumni and our community can be proud of."
The Royals will open their 2026–27 OCAA regular season at home on October 24 against the Sheridan Bruins.
