WINDSOR, ON — The Redeemer Royals men's soccer team travelled to Windsor on Friday to take on the St. Clair Saints in a closely contested match
The first half was a tight battle between the two sides, with neither team able to develop any key chances through the opening 45 minutes. The game remained scoreless heading into halftime.
Redeemer opened the scoring early in the second half as Andrew Beerda found the back of the net, assisted by Zion Brown, giving the Royals a 1-0 lead.
The remainder of the second half was fast paced, with both sides taking chances as they looked to change the scoreline. The Saints nearly found the equalizer around the middle of the half, but a Royals defender made a crucial clearance off the goal line to preserve Redeemer's lead.
Timo Sladakovic was key for the Royals in the second half, coming up with major saves to maintain the Royals' 1-0 advantage.
The Saints eventually found the equalizer late in the second half, scoring a beautiful free kick to tie the game at 1-1.
Redeemer nearly reclaimed the lead in the 87th minute when Leandro Alves sent a screamer towards the net, but the St. Clair goalkeeper came up with a stellar save to keep the game tied.
Neither side could find a late winner as the Royals and Saints finished the match in a 1-1 draw.
The Royals will now travel to Sarnia to face the Lambton Lions on Saturday, September 12.
