Redeemer University is excited to announce the upcoming induction of men's basketball standout Calvin Turnbull and women's volleyball All-Canadian Curtiss Straatsma into the Royals Hall of Fame.
Calvin Turnbull
A Burlington, Ontario, native, Turnbull played three seasons for the Royals from 2012–13 through 2014–15. He earned OCAA First Team All-Star honours in 2013–14 and Second Team All-Star honours in both 2012–13 and 2014–15. He was also named the Royals' men's basketball MVP in each of his first two seasons.
Former Royals head coach Jamie Girolametto called Turnbull "the ultimate competitor and leader." Despite playing only three seasons, Turnbull ranks among the program's top 10 in several career categories: sixth in points (953), fifth in points per game (17.02), third in rebounds (550), and second in rebounds per game (9.82).
"He was a tireless worker who was asked to give more than he thought he had," Girolametto said.
Turnbull averaged 16.4 points and 9.3 rebounds per game across his first two seasons. In his final year, he raised those averages to 18.4 points and 11 rebounds as the Royals improved to 10–7 and hosted a playoff game. Their season ended with a close loss to St. Lawrence, but it marked a promising step for the program.
Girolametto remembered Turnbull as "very quiet and humble," saying he led fellow student-athletes on and off the court through his commitment to education, faith, and athletics. Turnbull was recognized as a CCAA Academic All-Canadian in 2014–15.
"Calvin's induction recognizes more than his impressive numbers and awards. He set a standard through his work ethic, humility, and the way he cared for his teammates. That kind of leadership shapes a program long after a player's final game, and we are proud to welcome him into the Royals Hall of Fame," said James Kryger, Redeemer's Director of Athletics.
Girolametto said Turnbull "had a huge impact on the growth of the Royals men's basketball program" and "reshaped the culture of our program." In the four seasons from 2016–17 through 2019–20, the Royals compiled a 55–21 conference record, including a 19–1 season in 2017–18 when they went undefeated at home.
Curtiss StraatsmaÂ
Redeemer University is proud to announce the upcoming induction of Curtiss Straatsma into the Royals Hall of Fame, recognizing one of the most decorated student-athletes in program history.
Straatsma's career with the Royals women's volleyball program was marked by excellence and consistency. She established herself as one of the OCAA's premier players and set a standard that continues to inspire Redeemer student-athletes.
In 2012, Straatsma was named Redeemer Women's Volleyball Rookie of the Year and earned OCAA Second Team All-Star honours. She went on to win the Royals' women's volleyball MVP award in four consecutive seasons, from 2013 through 2016.
Her contributions were recognized across Royals Athletics as well. Straatsma was named Redeemer Royals Female Athlete of the Year four years in a row, from 2013 through 2016.
At the provincial level, Straatsma earned OCAA First Team All-Star honours in 2013, 2014 and 2016, along with a second OCAA Second Team All-Star selection in 2015. She received national recognition as a CCAA All-Canadian in 2016 and was also named a CCAA Academic All-Canadian during her career.
In 2016, Straatsma set OCAA career records with 1,350 points and 993 kills. Ten years later, those marks remain a striking measure of her skill and consistency.
"Curtiss brought excellence to every part of her experience as a Royal," said James Kryger, Redeemer's Director of Athletics. "Her records speak to what she accomplished on the court, but her lasting influence is the standard she set for those who followed her. It is a privilege to celebrate her place in Royals history."
