Straatsma Ties Redeemer Records

Royals defeat Mohawk 3-1 in Women's Volleyball

Erika Straatsma Ties Redeemer Kills and Points Record

Just days after Women's Volleyball player Erika Straatsma (Brampton, ON) nearly broke the Redeemer Royals record with her 17 kills in a match, she followed it up with 19 kills, tying the Redeemer record. Her 19 kills came in a big victory against rivals Mohawk College on Wednesday night. Straatsma also tied the Redeemer points in a match record with 24 total offensive points. 

Her 24 points on Wednesday night gave her a two game total of 43 points. The kills in a match record is now shared by Straatsma and Alumni Alison Lammers who had 19 kills against Niagara College in 2005. Alumni volleyball players Megan Hultink and Chantel Schutten are the only individuals to have every had 24 points in a match until Straatsma matched them this past week. Both Hultink and Schutten had there 24 points in 2009.

Most importantly, Straatsma's big night keep the Royals in the middle of the pack in the tough OCAA West Division. It also propelled the Lady Royals to their first victory over Mohawk College since 2007. Sister, Curtiss Straatsma (Brampton, ON)a, added 12 points for the Royals off of 11 kills and 1 ace. Game scores were 25-20, 25-27, 25-16, and 25-14.

In the men's game, Redeemer was outmatched by the Nationally ranked Mountaineers. After dropping the first set 26-24, the Royals had a tough time rebounding dropping the next two sets by an identical score of 25-16. David Klomps (Surrey, BC) had a team high 9 points.

Both men's and women's teams finish up the first semester with games on Saturday December 3rd at home against St. Clair College at 6pm and 8pm. The teams will certainly be looking to enter the Christmas Break on a winning note!
