Mountain Struggle Continues for Royals

Basketball losses have Royals at 0-6 against Mountaineers in 2012

The Redeemer Royals basketball teams made the short trip over to Mohawk College last night in their only action of the week. Both Royals team's came out on the losing end of the games and of the rivalry that is proving to turn fully in the Mountaineers favor.

So far in 2012, Redeemer has played Mohawk once in Women's and Men's Basketball, once in Women's and Men's Soccer, and once in Women's and Men's Volleyball for a total of 6 games. Redeemer has yet to beat Mohawk this season with the Mountaineers sweeping the first semester series of games.

In the Women's game, Redeemer's Jesseca Brown had a game high 27 points while Morrisa Lychak pulled in 15 rebounds to go with her 6 points. The Royals struggled from beyond the arc as they shot just 8.3%, hitting just 1 3-pointer in 12 attempts.

On the men's side, the defending National Champions put on a defensive show as they held the Royals to just 2 points in the 1st quarter. Redeemer was able to settle down in the 2nd quarter but unfortunately their shooting did not improve much. The Royals shot just 18.6 percent over the course of the game.

Redeemer's Calvin Turnbull led all scorers with 15 points while Mohawks' Taylor Dowhaniuk had 13 points, 14 rebounds, and 7 blocks for the Mountaineers.

Aside from league sports, Redeemer's Women's team did finish ahead of Mohawk at the OCAA Cross Country Championships. The Mountaineers finished ahead of the Redeemer men, however the Royals top runner, (Taylor Kraayenbrink) did finish higher than any runner from Mohawk.

Redeemer's Women's and Men's Basketball and Volleyball teams will get a shot at redemption next semester as the Royals will look to crack into the win column and renew the rivalry with their mountain neighbors.

The Women's and Men's basketball teams play Mohawk on Saturday February 2nd at home while the Women's and Men's volleyball teams play the following Saturday at Mohawk on February 9th.
