Royals Week in Review - OT Win In Exhibition for Men's Basketball

Soccer Sweeps Lambton, Basketball and Cross Country on the Road

A pair of important soccer wins on Saturday evening at Redeemer University College highlighted a busy week for the Royals. The Lady Royals (OCAA 2-4) defeated Lambton to sweep the season series and stay in the playoff hunt while the Men's team (2-3-1) halted a 4-game winless slide. Also in action this weekend, the Cross Country team hit the road for the 2nd meet of the season while both the women's and men's basketball teams got in some exhibition play.

Women's Soccer (OCAA 2-4)
An early strike in the 9th minute on Saturday night by Redeemer's Meaghan Rudd, set the pace for the Royals in their match against the Lambton Lions. Coming a way with a 2-1 win, Redeemer swept the season series with the Lions and continued to keep them in striking distance for a playoff spot. Lauren Tamming had the winner for the Royals as Lambton tied up the match in the 48th minute. Redeemer goalkeeper Cara Nash made an impressive 9 saves for her second win of the season.

Next for the Royals is a matchup with their crosstown rival Mohawk College. Mohawk will host the Royals at Redeemer's Soccer complex on Friday at 4:00pm.

Men's Soccer (OCAA 2-3-1)
A stellar performance by Redeemer's Wayne Otten in net and a late goal in the 88th minute by Lewis Tuininga gave the Royals a much-needed win on Saturday. Having secured just 1 point in their previous 4 matches, the win against Lambton College put the Royals back on track. After falling behind 1-0 in the second half when Lambton opened up the scoring, Alfonso Coto fired right back for the Royals, tying up the match with a beautifully placed header. Tuininga's strike in the final minutes secured the full 3 points for Redeemer.

Redeemer faces their neighbours on Friday at 6:00pm when Mohawk College hosts the Royals at Redeemer University College.

Cross Country
The Redeemer Cross Country team had a tough test ahead of them on Saturday when they traveled to the Waterloo Open to compete against some of the top University teams in the Province. Not only were they racing against the top teams, they were also racing different distances then the OCAA circuit. The Women's team captured 7th place overall in the 6km event, behind 6 OUA competitors. Adrianna So and Rachel Hoekstra led the way for Redeemer with a 30th and 33rd place finish.

On the men's side, the Royals also finished 7th. The distance was 2km longer than their norm; racing 10km. Kyle Maerz crossed the line first for Redeemer in 39th place.

Redeemer will travel to Seneca College, the host of the 2016 OCAA Championship, on Saturday October 15th to get a preview of the course for the upcoming event.

Women's Basketball (Non-Conference 1-2)
After splitting their first two exhibition games of the season, Redeemer found themselves on the losing end of a tough match against the Waterloo Warriors 100-57. The game, played at Fergus High School, gave the Royals a look at some very strong OUA competition after facing two OCAA teams the week prior.

Next up for the women's team is a trip out to the East Coast to New Brunswick. The Lady Royals fly out on October 7th.

Men's Basketball (Non-Conference 1-0)
The Men's Basketball team suited up for their first preseason action of the 2016-2017 season with a trip to George Brown College on Saturday afternoon. The Royals and Huskies exchanged blows for 4 quarters, settling nothing, finishing up in an overtime thriller. Down 5 heading into the 4th quarter, the Royals battled back to take the lead before 2 late free throws from George Brown tied it up. The Royals took control in OT winning 110-104.

Redeemer will travel to Waterloo on October 6th looking for their 2nd exhibition win.
