Royals women's basketball downs Bruins 102-98 in double OT

OAKVILLE, ON - The Redeemer University women's basketball team opened the second half of the OCAA regular season with a 102-98 double OT victory over the Sheridan Bruins on the road Wednesday night.

"Tonight was a battle of attrition," said Redeemer head coach Jesse VanHouwelingen.  "Sheridan came into the new year with a few great pickups and gave us a bit of trouble. We made some mistakes at the end of regulation and allowed Sheridan to push it into overtime. We kept our composure and ultimately secured the win in double OT. Talia, Jessica and Kayla all had strong performances to lead us. It was a great battle and our team rose to the challenge to come out on top."

Redeemer led 36-32 at the half and 54-49 after three quarters. In the opening three minutes of the fourth quarter, Sheridan went on a 8-0 run to go ahead 56-54. After four different lead changes, the Royals held a 74-71 lead in the final seconds of regulation, before fouling the Bruins Danyelle Campbell outside the three-point line, who went on to knock down all three free throws sending it to overtime.

In the first overtime, fourth year Jessica Angelini (Hamilton, ON) would put the Royals up 88-83 with a long three-pointer with 56 seconds left, but it was Sheridan answering back. With the Royals leading 91-88, it was Campbell again knocking down a three-pointer with nothing on the clock to tie it 91-91 sending it to a second overtime.

In the second overtime, Redeemer outscored Sheridan 6-2 in the final minute, including a jumper from first year Talia Vreugdenhil (Frankford, ON) with 20 seconds left and a clutch free throw from second year Kayla Simmonds (Hamilton, ON) in the final seconds, for the 102-98 road victory.

The Royals had four players in double figures led by Vreugdenhil who tied the school record for rebounds in a game with 20 and added a career high 30 points, the seventh best single game performance in the program's history. Angelini registered 26 points moving her into sixth all-time in school history with 547 career points. She also registered her 100th career three-pointer going 5-for-12 from beyond the arc. Simmonds contributed with 20 points and seven rounds while second year Karyn TeBrake (Ottawa, ON) added 12 points and five assists.

Sheridan was led by Campbell who recorded a game-high 32 points and 10 assists for the double-double. She went 9-for-39 from the field, including 4-for-16 from long range and 10-for-13 from the free throw line. Danika Warner chipped in with 16 points while GiaSophia Aoude and Akilah Rose added 13 and 10 points respectively.

For the game, Redeemer shot 35.1% from the field going 34-for-97, 20.0% (7-for-35) from three-point land and 55.1% (27-for-49) from the charity stripe. Sheridan went 37-for-109 (33.9%) from the field, 7-for-32 (21.9%) from downtown and 17-for-26 (65.4%) from the free throw line.
