ANCASTER, ON. Redeemer Men's Basketball (1-0) faced off against the cross-town rival Mohawk Mountaineers (1-0) Tuesday evening. Mohawk and Redeemer were ranked in the OCAA top ten following the first week of action. The all-time match-up between the Royals and Mountaineers is an even split 10-10. Tuesday's match-up will give one side the advantage until their next meeting.
Mohawk quickly jumped into control and got off to a substantial lead. Rallying off of their home crowd the Mountaineers finished the first quarter with a 31-9 lead. Mohawk capitalized on the second-chance opportunities and forced turnovers in the opening frame.
The Royals settled into the second quarter and began to play Royals Basketball. Redeemer was led by
Adam Pavlik and
Robert Mannella in the opening half. Pavlik had 9 points, while Mannella had eight. At half the score was 58-30. Redeemer played bucket for bucket in the second quarter with Mohawk, preventing the Mountaineers from growing their lead.
Redeemer continued to push the ball in the third quarter. The Royals had another competitive quarter but Mohawk continued to build on their lead. The Royals were unable to climb back into the match following their first-quarter deficit.
Mohawk closed out the match 106-65
Redeemer is on the road next Wednesday when they face the Conestoga Condors.
