HAMILTON, ON - OCAA playoffs began Wednesday night across the province. Redeemer women's soccer welcomed the St.Lawrence Surge to Hamilton Stadium for their Qualifying round match-up. Redeemer entered the first round match-up on one of the most dominant runs in the OCAA. The Reds were 5-1 in the last six matches, looking to make it six and advance to the OCAA Quarter finals for the second consecutive season.
Under the bright lights of Hamilton Stadium, the Royals continued to display their recent dominance. It took the Royals only four minutes of action to get on the scoreboard. Yet again, the corner specialist duo of
Emily Walraven and
Talia Vreugdenhil connected for the opener. Vreugdenhil headed home Walraven's corner delivery, her fourth of the season and first of the postseason, all coming from corner kicks. The senior defender had recorded four goals on five shots this season.
Sparked by early momentum, the Royals found themselves with another corner kick in the tenth minute. Walraven stepped up to the corner flag, but this time found herself a goal. The fourth-year star gave the Royals a two-nil lead with an olimpico.
Securing a two-goal lead ten minutes into the match, the Royals did not look back. The Redeemer offence was merely warming up; the Royals added three more goals before the half.
Alia Breukelman,
Ava Manshanden and
Joelle Mitton each scored their first of the postseason.
Redeemer led St.Lawrence 5-nil through the first forty-five minutes.
The Reds entered the second half poised to make a statement to the OCAA with a dominant first-round match. Redeemer added three more goals in the first fifteen minutes of the second half, extending their lead to 8-nil. Breukelman and Walraven notched their second of the match while
Kendra Sieders picked up her first goal of the match to accompany her two assists.
Leading 8-nil with thirty minutes remaining, the Royals displayed their depth. Eighteen Royals logged minutes in the opening match and outshot the Surge 30-4.
Redeemer enters the OCAA Quarter-Finals as one of the most dominant teams in the second half. The Royals improve to 6-1 in their last seven matches, outscoring their opponents 20-3.
The Reds travel to face the two-time defending OCAA Champion Seneca Sting on Saturday. The match will kick off at 12:00 PM at Newnham Field. The Sting are the third-ranked team in the country and number one in the province. Saturday's match will be a clash of two of the recent top teams in the OCAA.
