ANCASTER, ON - As the Redeemer Royals Women's Volleyball team gears up for the 2025 season, expectations are high. Building off last year's strong foundation, the team is aiming not just for wins but for growth, both as athletes and as a unified group.
The Royals have set ambitious goals, including making a deep playoff run and positioning themselves for a favourable crossover matchup come February. Head Coach
Kate Grasman emphasizes the team's focus beyond just results: "More than anything, we want to be a united team that plays together with confidence and joy. Our athletes have been very intentional about setting goals and reflecting on their progress throughout preseason."
One of the team's greatest assets is its depth. Each player brings something different to the court, and the coaching staff believes everyone on the roster can contribute in meaningful ways. Coach Grasman highlights the leadership within the squad, especially from the senior class: "We have a strong group of seniors who lead both on and off the floor. Their experience is invaluable in helping guide our younger athletes and shaping the culture we want to build."
This season also welcomes two promising newcomers,
Claire Heide and
Phoebe Sinke. Phoebe, a dynamic and creative setter, has impressed with her athleticism and playmaking ability. Claire provides a steady and reliable presence in the middle, bringing strong blocking skills and valuable experience from her time at Providence (MCAC). Coach Grasman notes, "Both Claire and Phoebe have adapted quickly and are already making important contributions to our team."
Compared to last year, the Royals have demonstrated greater consistency during exhibition play. "With a full year under our belt adopting new systems and tactics, the team is more comfortable within those systems and has built a strong foundation of trust," Grasman explains. This cohesion will be crucial as the season intensifies.
Fans can expect a faster-paced, more dynamic style of play from the Royals this year. The coaching staff plans to involve their middles more and increase tempo options on the pins, aiming to keep opponents off balance. "By diversifying our offensive tempo and involving more players, we hope to create pressure that leads to key points in tight matches," says Coach Grasman.
Physically, the team has focused heavily on strength and endurance during the offseason. Coach Grasman stresses the importance of preparation for a long season: "Our goal was to build a foundation of strength to keep us consistent and minimize injuries from September through March. Being physically prepared is critical to our ability to execute and compete at a high level all season long."
One of the season's most anticipated matchups is against St. Clair, a talented and physical team. The return of standout athlete Kiana Huggins adds extra intrigue to the rivalry. Coach Grasman shares her excitement: "St. Clair is always a great challenge, and with Kiana back on their squad, I'm looking forward to a competitive series. It's fun to coach against an old friend and teammate."
Beyond competition, what truly sets this team apart is their shared commitment to playing with purpose. For the Royals, volleyball is more than a game, it's a way to honour their faith and play with joy. Coach Grasman reflects, "Our athletes truly view volleyball as an expression of worship. This mindset brings a unique joy and humility to how they approach every practice and match."
Last season taught the team an important lesson: never underestimate themselves or their opponents. Coach Grasman recalls, "We had several close matches against teams ranked much higher, which showed the depth of talent in our division. The biggest takeaway was to never count ourselves out and to believe in our ability to compete with anyone."
With experience, fresh talent, and a clear sense of purpose, the Redeemer Royals are ready to make the 2025 season one to remember.
As the Royals start their season 2-0, picking up a pair of victories early in the season, they look composed for the competitive year.Â
