KISSIMMEE, FL - Redeemer opened their NCCAA Division I National Championship run on Monday in Kissimmee, Florida, taking on the tournament's No. 3 seed, the Houghton Highlanders of New York. Houghton controlled the match throughout and handed the Royals a 4–0 defeat in their first game of pool play.
Goalkeeper Sarah DeJong delivered two of Redeemer's biggest moments, both coming in the second half. The first was a sharp reaction stop on a crossed ball that was headed toward goal from close range, with DeJong turning it away to keep the Royals alive. Moments later, she denied Houghton from the penalty spot, diving to stop the attempt and prevent the score from growing further.
Redeemer continued to look for counter-attacking opportunities but found little room against a disciplined Highlanders back line. Houghton's pace and sustained pressure ultimately dictated the match.
The Royals return to action tomorrow, Tuesday, December 2, at 12:30 PM when they face Southwestern Christian in their second pool game.
