CCAA no.2 Mountaineers Fend Off Royals

HAMILTON, ON - The Redeemer Royals Women's Basketball team faced one of the toughest challenges in the country on the road, travelling across town to take on the undefeated and No. 2–ranked Mohawk Mountaineers.

Mohawk came out firing in the opening quarter to jump out to a commanding 32–9 lead after ten minutes of play. The Royals responded, settling into the game in the second quarter and matching the Mountaineers' intensity. Redeemer edged Mohawk 19–18 in the frame, showing improved ball movement and defensive pressure heading into halftime.

Despite the stronger second quarter, the Royals were unable to close the gap against the top-ranked CCAA opponent. Mohawk maintained control through the second half, ultimately securing a 90–56 victory.

Sophia VanRaalte and Sydney Lazenby led Redeemer offensively, each posting 16 points in strong individual scoring performances. Ava Froese and Talia Vreugdenhil anchored the Royals on the boards, collecting 10 rebounds apiece. Redeemer finished the night with a 40–36 rebounding advantage, a notable bright spot against one of the nation's elite teams.

Ball control proved to be the deciding factor for the Mountaineers, who committed just 11 turnovers while recording 32 assists. In contrast, the Royals were forced into 28 turnovers and finished with 12 assists, allowing Mohawk to consistently capitalize in transition and the half court.

Redeemer returns to action on Wednesday when they travel to face the Conestoga Condors (3–5). The Royals will look to build on their positives from this matchup, having defeated the Condors 71–65 in their previous meeting.
