JACKSONVILLE, FL - The Redeemer Royals faced a difficult challenge against the Bishop's Gaiters, the #1 seed at the national tournament and the only other Canadian program competing in AAU Division II men's hockey. The matchup also marked the first meeting between the two Canadian sides.
Bishop's came out strong and immediately set the tone. The Gaiters found their rhythm early, scoring five goals in the opening 20 minutes to build a convincing lead.
Redeemer settled into the game during the second period and began to generate more structured play. Midway through the frame,
Ethan Smith got the Royals on the board, finishing a play assisted by
Noah Wildeboer. Bishop's also added a goal in the period, sending the teams into the third with Redeemer trailing 6–1.
With their season on the line, the Royals needed to reach another level they hadn't shown yet this year. Redeemer was also without one of their key leaders, as captain
Dawson Abrahams, one of the team's top point producers, was a scratch from the game.
Redeemer found some early momentum in the third period when
Chase Browne scored to cut into the deficit. The goal was assisted by
Hayden Fernhout and
Asher Cabral, briefly giving the Royals a spark. However, Bishop's quickly responded to halt the momentum.
Physicality played a major role throughout the playoff matchup, with both teams using the body to battle for control of the game and dictate the pace of play.
Bishop's continued to press offensively and added several more goals down the stretch, ultimately securing a 10–2 victory over Redeemer. Despite the result, the game marked a historic moment as the first clash between Canada's two AAU Division II men's hockey programs.
The Royals hockey season comes to a close, but it is not without plenty of accomplishments to be proud of. Redeemer Hockey will now turn their eyes to the next season, hoping to build off of this years success.
