Royals Weekend Recap

Busy weekend wraps up with mixed results for Royals


6 teams were in action this past weekend for the Redeemer Royals including the men's and women's soccer teams, the badminton team, the cross country team, and both men's and women's volleyball teams. The following are the results:

Women's Soccer vs Sheridan
0-0 Tie

Shawna Druif recorded her 4th shutout of the season in her final home game of her career as the Lady Royals (3-3-1) walked away with a hard fought point against the 4-2-1 Sheridan Bruins. The point keeps the Royals slim playoff hopes alive. The game was also the final home match for graduating athletes Kristi Van Duyvendyk, Ashley Grootenboer, and Beth DeHaan.

Men's Soccer vs Sheridan
5-1 Loss

1st year Nick Dantuma scored the loan goals for the men's team as the Royals dropped their final home game of the season 5-1 to the undefeated Sheridan Bruins (6-0-1). The game was tied 1-1 at the half before Sheridan took control in the second with 4 unanswered goals. The game was the final home match for graduating athletes Ezra Branderhorst, Jeremy Stevens, Jordan Holmes, and Greg Dykxhoorn.

Men's Volleyball at Seneca Invitational
5th place (2-2)

The men's volleyball team got their first taste of action this weekend at the Seneca Sting Invitational. The men's team went 0-2 to start the tournament with tough losses to Humber (3-1) and Seneca (3-0) on Day 1 before storming back to a 2-0 record on Day 2. Day two saw the men's team beat Fanshawe 3-1 and Niagara 3-0.

Women's Volleyball at Sheridan Invitational

5th Place (2-3)

The women's volleyball team had an up and down weekend going 2-2 in pool play before losing in a crossover match with Seneca College in the playoffs. In round robin the Lady Royals fell to Humber, beat Mohawk, lost to Trent, and then beat Loyalist for their .500 record.

Cross Country at Fleming Invitational
6th Place - Men's Team
4th Place - Women's Team

With a short roster, the cross country teams took part in the Fleming College Invitational on Saturday. Both men's and women's teams ran strong races despite missing a number of their top finishers from the previous meets. Alex Van Geest crossed the line first for the Royals with a time of 31:31 while Alyssa Deschiffart came first for the Lady Royals with a time of 24:47.

Badminton at Humber Cup

10 Redeemer Royals traveled to Humber to take part in their first tournament of the season. On the men's side, Randal Brus went 3-0 in round robin before bowing out in the A flight quarterfinals. Dan Vanden Boogaard made his way to the B flight finals before losing the championship match. In team play, the pairing of Kate Zandstra and Courtney Sanders finished with a 2-1 record in ladies doubles while the men's pairing of Stephen Bowler and Randal Brus also finished with a 2-1 record. Ladies doubles team of Janelle Koopmans and Katherine Harvey finished with a 3-1 record and won the B flight championship.
