On paper, it was what was expected, but the men's and women's volleyball teams will certainly not be satisfied with a win against Canadore College and a loss against Nipissing University. Both teams went 1-1 in the weekend series defeating the Panthers Friday evening and loosing to the Lakers on Saturday afternoon. Both Canadore teams were hovering around the bottom of the OCAA West standings while the Nipissing teams were both ranked Nationally and at the top of the OCAA West standings.
The Lady Royals (2-3) did what they needed to do to win on Friday night with a 3-1 victory (25-23, 19-25, 25-21, 25-17) in a match that was slightly closer than it should have been. Sisters
Erika Straatsma (Brampton, ON) and
Curtiss Straatsma (Brampton, ON) had 19 and 17 points respectively as they combined for just over half of Redeemer's total offesive points.
Ashley Muller (Oakville, ON) also hit double-digit points with 15 for the Lady Royals. Liza Grenon had a team high 17 points for Canadore. On Saturday, a different Royals team showed up as they went toe to toe with one of the best teams in Canada. The Lady Royals got off to a great start and held a 7 point lead (17-10) in the first set but couldn't seem to close out the match as the Lakers rallied for a 25-23 win. The second and third sets also proved to be a back and forth affair. Unfortunately for the Royals they were on the losing end of both falling 25-20 and 25-23 and dropping the match 3-0. The Lakers now move to 5-1 while the Royals fall to 2-3. Curtiss Straatsma once again had a dominant game for Redeemer leading all scorers with 16 points.
The men's team had a similar weekend as the women's team.
Aaron Vanderlugt (Burlington, ON) led the Royals to a 3-0 win against Canadore on Friday night with scores of 25-18, 25-19, and 25-19. Vander Lugt had a team high 10 points. The victory stretched the men's win streak to 3 games since loosing their home opener to Fanshawe College. On Saturday, the men squared off against the #4 ranked team in Canada. Despite falling behind 2-0 (25-22, 25-19), the men's team found the ability to battle back, winning the next 2 games (25-21, 25-17) and evening up the match 2-2. Unfortunately, that's where the momentum shifted for the teams as Nipissing gained control once again and cruised to a 15-4 win.
David Klomps (Surrey, BC) had a game high 17 points while Aaron Vander Lugt continued his strong play with 16 points.
Cameron Groenendijk (Chemainus, BC) aslo had 12 points for Redeemer.
Redeemer volleyball takes the court this upcoming week with 2 big games. They are on the road on Tuesday against the Humber Hawks as well as on Friday at the Conestoga Condors.
