Both Royals Basketball and Volleyball teams saw action this past weekend as one team was out on the road and the other played at home. The Volleyball teams traveled to Kitchener, ON to play the Conestoga Condors on Friday evening. The Basketball teams took the court at home on Saturday afternoon against the Niagara Knights.
The Men's Volleyball team (4-3 OCAA) was the loan winner out of the 4 teams with a 3-0 win over Conestoga (1-5 OCAA). The Lady Royals (2-5 OCAA) continued their downward trend with their 3rd loss in a row loosing 3-1 to the Condors (3-3 OCAA).
The Basketball teams couldn't keep pace with the Niagara Knights as the Lady Royals (0-6 OCAA) lost their 6th in a row to Niagara (3-4 OCAA) 57-31 while the men's basketball team (3-3 OCAA) winning streak was snapped with a 80-65 loss to the Knights (6-1 OCAA).
Top performers from the weekends games were 1st year Paul Hart who had a game high 32 points for the Men's Basketball team and Erika Straatsma who had 17 kills and 2 aces (19 points) for the women's volleyball team. Both totals were just shy of Redeemer records. Hart's 32 points was second all-time behind Redeemer Hall of Famer Eric Bulthuis who had 39 points in 2004. The 32 points matched Alumni Jordan DeWeger's 32 in 2007. Straatsma's 17 kills were just 2 shy of Alumni Alison Lammers record from 2005 of 19 kills.
A busy week ahead in varsity sports sees the Basketball teams on the Road on Wednesday at Fanshawe College and at Sheridan College on Saturday. The Men's Basketball team also travels to Houghton College (New York) on Thursday for an exhibition game. The Volleyball teams also have two games this week as they play on Wednesday night at Mohawk College before return home on Saturday for games against St. Clair College.
