Royals struggle in 2012 openers

It was not the start the Royals were looking for to open up the New Year as Redeemer had 1 win and 3 losses in league sports this past weekend. The lone winner was the Men's Volleyball team who had little trouble against the Conestoga Condors in a 3-0 sweep.

11 players recorded offensive points for the Men's team as they took the games 25-8, 25-13, and 25-11. Eric Heidbuurt (Waterdown, ON) had a game high 9 points from 8 kills and 1 ace. The Royals came into the match fresh off of their Christmas Break trip to San Diego. The result of the competition during the break proved worthwhile as Redeemer looked focused and ready to go from the opening whistle and were in total command of the game from start to finish.

The Women's Volleyball team struggled at home against Conestoga in their match, loosing 3-0 with scores of 25-18, 25-16, and 27-25. The Lady Royals looked to have a little rust after the holiday break and unfortunately were hurt by unforced errors. After a full week of practice this upcoming week, the Women's team will look to turn things around this weekend when they travel with the Men's team to North Bay for matches against Canadore College and Nipissing University. Curtiss Straatsma (Brampton, ON) and Erika Straatsma (Brampton, ON) led the Royals offensively as they accounted for 7 points each. Tiffany Pinksen and Chantel Renaud had a game high 8 points each for the Condors. The match saw the return of former Royal Karla Dykxhoorn who recently transferred to Conestoga College. Dykxhoorn had 1 stuff block in 1 game played in the match.

The Men's and Women's Basketball teams went up against the Lambton Lions on Saturday and while both games were close, the Royals were on the loosing end of each. The Women's game saw the return of Morrisa Lychak (Nepean, ON) to the lineup. Lychak missed the first semester due to injury. She proved eager to play as she had a team high 17 points and 10 rebounds. Courtney Lundy had a game high 29 points as she led the Lions to a 76-57 win.

The Men's team kept pace with Lambton the whole way through but a disappointing 2nd quarter cost them as they were outscored 28-8 on their way to a 77-70 loss. Paul Hart (Ancaster, ON) and Dhimitri Luarasi (Rochester, NY ) each had 17 points for the Royals. The Royals struggled to rebound as Lambton finished the game with a total of 52 rebounds to Redeemers 28. Mike Lucier had a game high 22 points for Lambton. Both Men's and Women's Basketball teams will travel to Sault Ste. Marie this week as they face Sault College and Algoma University in two big road games.
