It was a very important weekend for Redeemer's basketball teams this weekend and both teams responded well. Both men's and women's teams were in action on Friday night and Saturday afternoon. Redeemer came out of the weekend with 3 wins in the 4 games with the men's basketball team going 2-0.
The Men's Basketball team played Lambton College at home on Friday night before hosting the St. Clair Saints on Saturday. The men's team went into the weekend still searching for their first win. When the dust had settled on Saturday evening, the Royals found themselves on a 2 game winning streak. Redeemer defeated Lambton College on Friday night 61-55 in a nail-bitter before dominating St. Clair on Saturday 80-55.
Calvin Turnbull (Burlington, ON) had a game-high 17 points in Friday's win while
Benn Ibrahim (Windsor, ON) added 12.
Paul Hart (Ancaster, ON) had an impressive 8 assists. The Royals outscored Lambton in every quarter except the 3rd, however, the game saw 9 lead changes and 6 ties as it was a battle from the start to finish. Poor execution from the free throw line almost cost Redeemer the victory as they shot just 54.5% on 18/33 shooting. Fortunately for the Royals they led the game in almost every other area including rebounds, points off turnovers, and defensive stops.
Mike Lucier had a team-high 14 points for the Lions in the loss.
On Saturday afternoon, a big 1st quarter gave the Royals the lead as they never trailed in an 80-55 win. The St. Clair Saints kept it close in the 2nd and 3rd quarters before Redeemer put it away in the 4th outscoring them 28-12. The Royals had a very balanced attack with 4 players hitting double digits in points. Paul Hart had 14 points while Benn Ibrahim, Calvin Turnbull, and
Kevin Maynard (Hamilton, ON) all had 10 points.
The Royals found their scoring touch as they shot an impressive 31/67 for the game (46.3%). They were able to correct their poor free throw shooting from the night before by going 13/15 for 86.7%.
Anthony DeRose had a team-high 13 points for St. Clair in the defeat. Redeemer's men's team now improves to a record of 2-4.
The Women's Basketball team finished the weekend against the same opponents as the men's team with a 1-1 record. The Lady Royals lost to Lambton College on Friday night 64-61 before defeating the Saints on Saturday 76-64.
Redeemer maintains their .500 record with 3 wins and 3 loses this season. The 6 points is good enough for 2nd place in the OCAA west division.
In Friday's game against Lambton there was only 1 lead change. Unfortunately for Redeemer it cost them the victory. The Royals led from the start all the way to just 30 seconds left in the game where the surrendered the lead for the first time in the game. Redeemer couldn't get it back, falling to the Lions by just 3 points.
Esther Weima (Nepean, ON) had a team-high 17 points for the Royals while
Arica Price (Fort McMurray, AB) pitched in for 16.
Riley Williams had a game-high 21 points for Lambton in the win.
On Saturday the Royals tried to get back on track as this time they grabbed an early lead and were able to hold on to it. A huge 3rd quarter by the Royals in which they outscored St. Clair 23-7 was the difference.
Redeemer's
Jesseca Brown (Grand Manan, NB) had a game-high 23 points while Arica Price scored 20 points against her former team. Morissa Lychak had a big game for Redeemer as she scored 19 points and pulled in 14 rebounds.
Both Men's and Women's Basketball teams return to action this week when they travel to Niagara College on November 15th for games at 6pm and 8pm.
