Royals Drop OT Thriller

Basketball teams swept by Niagara Knights

Both Women's and Men's Basketball teams came away with losses last night as they traveled to Niagara College. The women's team dropped a 77-52 decision while the Knights needed double overtime to beat the Royals 90-87.

In the women's game, the Lady Royals struggled right out of the gate as the Knights built a big lead in the 1st quarter 23-13. The Royals clawed back in the 2nd quarter and outscored Niagara 17-14 but poor shooting throughout the rest of the game kept the Royals from closing the gap.

Redeemer shot just 29% from the floor including 1/16 from the 3-point line and just 52% in free throws. Niagara shot 41.3% in the game. 3 Royals hit double figures as Jesseca Brown (Grand Manan, NB) had 17, Arica Price (Fort McMurray, AB) had 14, and Morrisa Lychak (Nepean, ON) had 13. Lychak also added 10 rebounds while Price had 6 assists and 6 steals.

Kaitlyn McPherson had a game-high 19 points and 13 rebounds for the Knights in the win.

The men's game was quite different from the women's as there were countless lead changes as both teams battled into double overtime. Redeemer outscored Niagara in the 2nd and 4th quarters while Niagara led the way in the 1st and 3rd quarters. Both teams scored 9 points in the 1st overtime while it was a single 3 pointer that was the difference in the game as the Knights outscored the Royals 13-10 in the 2nd overtime.

Recently named OCAA Athlete of the week Calvin Turnbull (Burlington, ON) led the Royals in scoring with 24 points and 12 rebounds. Benn Ibrahim (Windsor, ON) had 19 points and Paul Hart (Ancaster, ON)had 18.

Alex Campbell had a game-high 30 points for Niagara in the win.

The men's team travels to Canadore College this weekend to take on the Condors in North Bay. The women's team is idle. Both teams are on the road next week Wednesday when they travel to Mohawk College for games at 6pm and 8pm. Mohawk's men's team is the defending National Champions.
