Both Men's and Women's Basketball teams took a step backwards on Saturday in the race for a playoff spot. Both teams fell in OCAA action to the Humber Hawks. Despite strong first halves, the Royals struggled to keep pace in the second half and now face a tough uphill climb towards a top 6 finish in the OCAA West.
The Women's team came out strong against Humber led by
Morrisa Lychak (Nepean, ON) 11 first half points. Unfortunately, a lapse in intensity in the 3rd quarter cost the Lady Royals as they were outscored 20-10 as Humber opened up a 50-33 lead. The gap proved to be too large as Redeemer came out on the losing end 66-45.
Morrisa Lychak continued her strong play with 14 points in the loss.
Victoria Pickering (Campbellville, ON) added 11 points for Redeemer.
Humber's Marie Maranan had a game-high 15 points.
The Lady Royals have now dropped 6 out of their last 7 and sit with a record of 4 and 9.
However, despite the recent struggles, Redeemer still sits only 2 points out of a playoff spot. They have 5 games remaining and many of them are against teams that sit around them in the standings.
The Royals face a must win game this Saturday when they host the Mohawk Mountaineers at 6pm. The men take the court at 8pm.
Both Women's and Men's games will be broadcasted on Cable 14 television.
In the Men's match, a poor finish to the 1st half, saw the Hawks take a 7-point lead into the break. The Royals actually held the lead at 30-26 with 2 minutes to play. Unfortunately, a number of bad choices by Redeemer sent Humber on a 11-0 run heading into halftime.
Redeemer was never able to recover. Down 71-50 in the 4th quarter, the Royals did make it interesting with a 13-0 run as they closed the lead to 71-63 and got within 8 points. Humber was able to hit their free throws down the stretch though as the final stood at 84-69.
Benn Ibrahim (Windsor, ON) led Redeemer with 17 points including 12 in the 4th quarter. Ali Askarov,
Chris McFadden-Martin (Oakland, USA), and
Calvin Turnbull (Burlington, ON) also all hit double-figures.
Brandon Sam-Hinton had 22 points for Humber in the win.
The Men's team sits in 7th spot, 6 points out of 6th. The Royals have 5 games remaining that kicks off with the defending National Champions, Mohawk College, on Saturday at Redeemer.
