It was likely a sign that neither the men's or women's basketball teams were ready for their seasons to end as they both took their final games of the season to overtime on Saturday afternoon. In a record setting season for the basketball program, the Royals didn't seem to want to get off the court. The Lady Royals were able to secure their 6th win of the season while the men's team fell just short of capturing their 8th win.
The opponent, the Niagara Knights, walked away with a 1-1 record. Redeemer defeated Niagara 80-74 in OCAA women's basketball action while it was the Knights that defeated the Royals 89-79 on the men's side.
The women's match was tied 60-60 after regulation time after a back and forth game that was also tied at 31-31 at halftime. The Royals looked to have the game locked up with minutes to play when Redeemer took a 60-53 lead but a 7-0 run by the Knights drove the game into overtime.
In the overtime, the Royals countered with their own 7-0 run and never looked back. Redeemer rode that lead right to the end of the game in the 80-74 win.
The Royals finished the season with 6 wins. After failing to win a game for the previous 7 seasons, the improvement for the program is a huge step. With no sign of the team dropping off, it looks like the Lady Royals have gone from bottom of the basement to a playoff contending team for 2013-2014. Veteran
Morrisa Lychak (Nepean, ON) played in her final game as a Redeemer Royal and made it count with the big and 17 points.
Rookie
Jesseca Brown (Grand Manan, NB) had a season high 31 points for the Royals, setting a Redeemer record for points in a game.
In the Men's game, Niagara went on a 9-2 run to finish the overtime to secure the win 89-79. The Royals, who sent the game into overtime with a buzzer beater layup, needed every second on the clock to claw all the way back from a 45-26 halftime deficit.
Calvin Turnbull (Burlington, ON) and Ali Askarov led the charge for the Royals in the comeback. Turnbull had 18 points while Askarov had 17.
Alex Campbell had 22 points for the Knights in the victory.
For the men's team, one of the most successful seasons in the history of the Royals Men's Basketball program comes to an end. With no graduating athletes in 2012-2013, the Royals will look to build on their record setting 8 wins and come back ready to challenge for a playoff spot in 2013-2014.
