The Redeemer Men's Basketball team has booked their spot in the OCAA's 'Second Season' for the first time in program history. The Royals are headed to the Postseason on the backs of their 10-7 league record and will put everything on the line in a Provincial crossover match two weeks from now. Who they will face and where is yet to be determined. Redeemer has their own fate in their hands when they travel to Lambton College this Saturday for their season finale. Lose and they will travel for the crossover. Win and they will be hosting their 1-game elimination match in front of their home fans with the chance to advance to the OCAA Provincial Championships for the first time ever.
An explosive 101-91 win for the Royals on Friday night against the 12-4 Fanshawe College mixed in with a loss on Saturday by Lambton College against Niagara College, secured a tie for Redeemer with the 4th place Lions heading into this weekend's final game.
Redeemer's
John Woldue led the Royals with 32 points on Friday against the #11 nationally ranked Falcons. The team took a 79-59 lead into the 4th quarter where Redeemer cruised to the victory shooting an incredible 57.8% from the field. Woldue also added 11 assists.
After Saturday's match, the path to the Championships will become a little clearer. A 4th place finish by Redeemer will see the Royals host the 5th place team from the East. A loss Saturday to Lambton will have the Royals travel to the 4th place team from the East.
Despite already being guaranteed a spot in the Provincial Championships as the Host institution, the Women's Volleyball team finished their league play with a 6 game win-streak. The streak included 2 wins this past weekend against Boreal (3-0) and Cambrian (3-1) in the team's final matches before the Championships.
Although the Royals have an automatic bye to the Final 8, the team has proven they deserve to be a contender for the Championship, finishing 3rd in the very tough OCAA West division. The Lady Royals complete their regular season with a 12-6 record.
Redeemer will now await their first round match-up against the Trent Excaliber (2nd East). The Royals will be looking for some redemption against the team that ousted them in 2014 from the OCAA bronze medal match.
With two Redeemer league sport teams advancing to the Postseason, there are also two teams on the outside looking in. With 1 game remaining against Lambton on Saturday, the Women's Basketball team will see their season come to a close. Positive steps each season for the Lady Royals have them pointing towards the playoffs, but their shot at a Provincial medal will have to wait one more season.
For the Men's Volleyball season, a rebuilding year has placed the team in a position they are not familiar with. With countless trips to the postseason and 3 Provincial medals in recent years, Redeemer will be watching from the sidelines for 2015. A team not lacking in hunger, the Royals will be looking to return to form for the 2015-2016 season and be back into the postseason that they have become very accustomed to.
