It is a third straight trip to the CCAA National Badminton Championship for Redeemer's
Owen Kurvits. After being named the OCAA Player of the Year on Friday, Kurvits picked up more hardware on Saturday, capturing a silver medal in men's singles at the Provincial Championship. This is Owen's third consecutive OCAA medal having collected gold in 2013-14 & 2014-15.
Joining him at the National Championships are Redeemer's
Ryan Phan and
Kevin Barkman. The duo captured the silver medal in the men's doubles event, solidifying their ticket to the Canadian event. Both Phan and Barkman are in their first year for the Royals and will be making their inaguaral appearance at the National Championships.
Kurvits advanced to the finals after cruising through the round robin winning 4 matches and dropping one. He then beat Yue Chen from U of T Mississaugua in the semi-finals. In the gold medal match, he fell to the East's #1 player, Wenchao Shi from Seneca. Shi will be joining Kurvits on team Ontario at the National Championship.
The road to the finals was very similar for the pairing of Phan and Barkman. They made their way through the round robin with a 4-1 record before beating Georgians pair of Eric Kern and Ethan Zhao in the semi-finals. In the finals they matched up against the strong men's doubles team from Humber, Adam Dong and Ryan Chow. Dong and Chow were the only team to beat Phan and Barkman throughout the tournament.
