ANCASTER , ON - The Redeemer Royals women's basketball program is celebrating a pair of standout performers following the release of the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association West Division awards, as third-year guard Sydney Lazenby and rookie forward Sophia VanRaalte earned conference recognition for their exceptional seasons.
Lazenby etched her name among the conference's elite, capturing the OCAA West Scoring Champion title after averaging 17.3 points per game. The third-year guard delivered five 20-plus point performances this season and caught fire in the second semester, resetting her career high in scoring four times across a five-game stretch. Her scoring surge peaked with a dominant 27-point performance against Humber, showcasing her ability to take over games when it mattered most.
In addition to leading the West in scoring, Lazenby was named an OCAA West Second Team All-Star, the first all-star honour of her collegiate career. Her consistent offensive production and leadership were instrumental in driving the Royals' success throughout the season.
Joining Lazenby on the awards list was first-year standout Sophia VanRaalte, who was named to the OCAA West All-Rookie Team. VanRaalte made an immediate impact in her debut season, averaging 12.2 points per game, the second-highest mark on the team. She was also a force on the glass, pulling down 121 total rebounds, averaging 8.1 per game, which ranked second on the Royals.
Defensively, VanRaalte established herself as one of the top rim protectors in the conference, recording 24 blocks, the third-most in the OCAA. Her presence in the paint on both ends of the floor made her one of the league's most complete freshmen.
With Lazenby's offensive brilliance and VanRaalte's all-around impact, the future remains bright for the Royals as they are both set to return to the lineup next season.Â
