Weekend Recap - Second Best for Trio of Teams

A busy weekend with three programs going the distance

Silver lining was the theme of the weekend for the Redeemer Royals as a trio of programs advanced to their respective tournament finals but fell just short of capturing the crown. By all accounts, it was a hugely successful set of exhibition events for the Royals as a number of programs concluded their final preparations before the 2014-2015 regular season gets underway. The Badminton, Men's Volleyball, and Women's Volleyball programs all captured hardware while the Men's Basketball team won their non-conference game on Saturday afternoon.

Women's Volleyball
The Lady Royals appear ready to begin their season this upcoming Tuesday evening at Conestoga after a strong showing on Friday and Saturday at the Fred Wannamaker Invitational at Sheridan College. The Royals advanced all the way to the final but fell to the host 2-0 in the Championship. Redeemer's record throughout the tournament was 5-2 with their only 2 losses coming to Sheridan. Redeemer defeated Cambrian (2-1), UTM (2-0), Loyalist (2-1), Conestoga (2-0), and Durham (2-1).

Men's Volleyball
The Men's Volleyball team worked their way through a very competitive field at the Seneca Sting Invitational to earn their spot in the Championship final against the talented Niagara Knights. In a well balanced and extremely competitive final, the Royals dropped the final to the Knights 3-2 in a matchup between two teams that are quickly becoming one of the leagues biggest rivals. Redeemer defeated Seneca (3-2), Fanshawe (3-0), and Sheridan (3-0) to earn 1st place in their pool.

Badminton
The Redeemer Royals Badminton team picked up where they left off last season with a strong showing at their first exhibition tournament of the 2014-2015 season. Reigning Men's Singles Provincial Champion, Owen Kurvits, went 5-0 in round robin before losing in the final to Adam Dong of Humber. Kurvits also found the podium with playing partner Robyn Bennett in the Mixed Doubles event as the duo finished tied for 3rd after losing to Seneca in the semi-final.

Men's Basketball
The Men's Basketball team continued their non-conference preseason play on Saturday as they hosted Manchester University of the NCAA. The Royals defeated Manchester with ease 70-47 in the matinee. Redeemer's John Woldue had a game high 17 points for Redeemer while Calvin Turnbull (15) and Josh de Schiffert (14) each hit double digit points. The Royals have one last exhibition tournament slated for this upcoming weekend at Rochester University in Michigan.
