For the second year in a row, the Redeemer Royals Women's Basketball team came up just short of advancing to the OCAA Provincial Championship. Redeemer traveled to Seneca on Saturday for a winner-take-all match with the winner advancing to the OCAA Championship, hosted by the Humber Hawks March 2-4.
The match featured the #2 ranked East team (Sting) and the #7 ranked West team (Royals). Determined to play the underdog role, the Royals left everything on the court in a 66-63 loss on the road.
Despite holding leads of up to 10 points, the Royals depth became an issue, having only 8 players available for the game. The Sting kept coming at the Royals though who led after each of the first 3 quarters.
Seneca finally took the lead in the 4th quarter and went on to score fourteen consecutive points to take an 8 point lead. Redeemer cut the lead down to 3, but missed an attempt to tie the game with 5 seconds remaining, ending the game.
The Royals were led by OCAA West Scoring Champion, Jessica Bosma ,who scored 17 points and had 14 rebounds. Tobie Brinkman added 16 points, 8 rebounds, 4 assists and 4 steals.
