Women's Basketball: Depth and Athleticism Lead Royals in Season Outlook

ANCASTER, ON - As the Redeemer Royals Women's Basketball team prepares for the 2025 campaign, Head Coach Jesse VanHouwelingen is optimistic about the team's potential to make history and build on last year's successes. "Our team's goals are to make the playoffs in the OCAA and host a home playoff game for the first time in women's basketball history at Redeemer," says Coach VanHouwelingen. "We also want to qualify for the NCCAA Women's Basketball National Championships. But ultimately, our goal is to play and coach the sport we love, all for the glory of God."

The Royals return seven players from last year's roster, including key standouts Sydney Lazenby and Talia Vreugdenhil. "Talia is a defensive force who anchors our interior defence, guarding multiple positions," Coach VanHouwelingen explains. "Offensively, she's powerful and tenacious, consistently leading the team and league in rebounding. I expect nothing less this year." Sydney Lazenby is also instrumental on the court and in the locker room. "Sydney is a special leader with tremendous energy and positivity. Her ability to get to the rim opens up many offensive options for us," notes the coach. Alongside them, players like Abigail Hoogland, Ava Froese, Daniella Zondag, and Faith Noble offer versatility, size, and rebounding prowess, providing matchup challenges for opponents. Coach VanHouwelingen also expresses hope for the return of Jasmine DeBoer, who missed last season due to injury. "If healthy, Jasmine will bring unmatched tenacity and be the glue that holds our team together."

The Royals are equally excited about their new recruits. "Sophia Van Raalte brings tremendous versatility and athleticism, with great footwork and finishing ability," says VanHouwelingen. "I predict she'll be among the top shot blockers in the OCAA West." Ava VanHouwelingen adds a high basketball IQ and defensive versatility, coupled with a reliable three-point shot. Zoe Dejonge, a true point guard, brings strong ball-handling and defensive skills along with smart playmaking.

This year's roster stands out for its athleticism and versatility. "We have four players six feet or taller, and several others close," Coach VanHouwelingen points out. "Many players can guard multiple positions, which I think will give opponents serious matchup problems."

Fans can expect a gritty, hard-working team that plays "with a vertical purpose," a term Coach VanHouwelingen uses to describe the Royals' commitment not only to basketball but to their faith. "This is a close-knit group that loves to play basketball but also loves to further the Kingdom," he says. On the court, defence has been a major focus in the offseason. "Last year, we gave up too many three-point shots and over-helped defensively," the coach admits. "This year, we're focused on guarding the ball tightly, forcing tough shots, and using our athleticism to get out in transition. Finishing possessions and rebounding will be critical."

Every game in the OCAA West division matters, but Coach VanHouwelingen is particularly looking forward to the home opener against the Mohawk Mountaineers. "They're the team to beat this year, coached by a great friend and leader, Mihai Raducanu. It's always special to open the season at home against such a formidable opponent."

The integration of new players has been seamless, thanks largely to the welcoming spirit of returning athletes. "Our returning players have really embraced the rookies and made them feel like family," says the coach.

While last season taught many lessons, Coach VanHouwelingen highlights the importance of consistent defensive effort and team unity as they move forward. He also points to their deep commitment to playing for a greater purpose. "This team plays with a level of faith and joy that goes beyond basketball. They compete to honour God and support each other, which is inspiring to witness."

With a balanced roster, strong leadership, and clear goals, the Redeemer Royals Women's Basketball team is poised for a memorable 2025 season.
