OTTAWA - Redeemer's Josh Elgeti and Lewis Tuininga are rewarded for a fantastic season for the Royals. Both players were named OCAA League All-Stars at last night's OCAA Men's Soccer Championship Banquet at Algonquin College. The Soccer Championship takes place Friday October 25th-Saturday October 26th.
Algonquin College's
Abraham Kamara is the 2013 Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) men's soccer player of the year. He received the award in a ceremony held in Ottawa on Thursday evening.
Kamara (Ottawa) won the OCAA East Division scoring championship scoring six goals in eight matches for a goals per game average of 1.33. Arguably, his most important goal game in a 1-1 draw against Centennial on Sept. 22, keeping Algonquin's undefeated season alive and giving the Thunder an all-important point in the standings. Kamara scored two goals in a game on three separate occasions.
Along with his divisional scoring title, Kamara is also an OCAA all-star and a Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) all-Canadian.
Also earning all-Canadian honours is Nicholas Lindsay (Brampton) of Sheridan College and Mario Orestano (Woodbridge) of Humber College. Lindsay led all OCAA players scoring 11 goals in six games for a goals per game average of 1.83. The veteran Orestano played in five games during the regular season, scoring once. Both are OCAA all-stars.
The OCAA rookie of the year is Darragh Roe (Guelph) of Sheridan. The midfielder scored six goals in eight games, good for eighth in OCAA scoring.
Paul D'Hollander of Fanshawe College is the OCAA West coach of the year and a nominee for the CCAA coach of the year. D'Hollander led the Falcons to a share of the best record in the division at 6-1-1, allowing just five goals in eight matches. Fanshawe's biggest win came at Sheridan, a 1-0 outcome that ended the Bruins bid for a perfect season.
Team awards went to the Algonquin Thunder and Humber Hawks for their respective regular season championships in the East and West Divisions. Both were awarded best defensive teams as well, along with the Sheridan Bruins. All three teams allowed just four goals against in eight regular season matches.
Divisional honours were also awarded to several players and coaches. Defender and midfielder Alex Asmis (Ottawa) of Algonquin is the East Division rookie of the year. He played in eight matches, scoring once. He is also an OCAA all-star.
Julian Carr of Centennial College is the East Division coach of the year. The Colts finished in second place with a 5-1-2 record, earning a bye into the OCAA quarter-finals. Centennial was unbeaten in its first six games, including a 1-1 tie against eventual regional champion Algonquin.
Third-year defenders Oshawe Hylton (Ajax) of Fleming College and Jennison Flores (Costa Rica) of Sheridan are the defensive players of the year in the East and West Divisions, respectively. Third-year athlete Simon Brown (Ottawa) of Algonquin and fourth-year player Ben Goes (London) of Fanshawe were named top goalkeepers in their respective divisions.
Each OCAA team nominates two all-stars. The OCAA all-stars from the East include Asmis and Kamara of Algonquin; Stephane Legrand (Sudbury) and Adam McArthur (Owen Sound) of Cambrian College; Louay Saab (Scarborough) and Emile Saimovici (Vancouver) of Centennial; Hamza Bakkali (Ottawa) and Zakaria El Karafi (Morocco) of Cité Collégiale; Kasiff DeJonge (Ajax) and Duncan Mitchell (Oshawa) of Durham College; Hylton and Nick London (Hampton) of Fleming; Justin Bettencourt (Mississauga) and Artsiom Biba (Belarus) of George Brown College; Brandon Hunt (Kingston) and Joel Pickering (Kingston) of St. Lawrence College (Kingston); as well as Shiquan Lowe (Brampton) and Mario Lugo (Toronto) of Seneca College.
The OCAA West all-stars include Danilo Richards (Kitchener) and Brad Townsend (Guelph) of Conestoga College; Steve Hepton (London) and Justin Marques (London) of Fanshawe; Orestano and Dominic Roberts (Ajax) of Humber; Elliot Pecora (Sarnia) and Jeremy Wintjes (Chatham) of Lambton College; Patryk Korbut (Barrie) and Rob Schlosser (Winona) of Mohawk College; Jordi Amores (Niagara Falls) and Austin MacDonell (Ajax) of Niagara College; Josh Elgeti (Peterborough) and Lewis Tuininga (Orillia) of Redeemer University College; Mo Hamoud (Windsor) and Jordan Lidia (Leamington) of St. Clair College; as well as Flores and Lindsay of Sheridan.
The 2013 belairdirect OCAA Men's Soccer Championship takes place Friday and Saturday at Algonquin College in Ottawa.
